Float along
The Longest Snake
in Swan Valley
Running 66 miles through Eastern and Southeastern Idaho’s landscape, the South Fork of the Snake River flows gracefully through Swan Valley, beginning its journey from Palisades Dam . It starts with a narrow channel and then widens around scenic island complexes, featuring the Fall Creek Falls waterfall near the Swan Valley Bridge. If you have time, hike the short trail to the Falls and wade in its pools. Grab some deli sandwiches from the Swan Valley General Store and bring a picnic.
Come fly with me!
In Swan Valley, we don’t fly by air. We fly by water. Fly fishing, that is. The South Fork of the Snake River is hailed as a top-tier trout fishing spot nationwide. It attracts anglers for its abundance of native Yellowstone cutthroat trout known for their voracious appetite for dry flies. In addition to these prized catches, the river also boasts populations of rainbow and brown trout. The South Fork is well-known among anglers as a premier blue-ribbon trout fishery, and the 1997 World Fly-Fishing Championship was hosted on this scenic waterway.
More than a Swansong
A birdwatcher's delight
Did you know the river supports the West’s largest riparian cottonwood gallery forest, fostering a unique ecosystem teeming with wildlife? Recognized as a “National Important Bird Area” by the Audobon Society, it hosts 126 bird species, including 21 raptors. In early Spring, be on the lookout for bald eagles fishing the river waters, trumpeter swans tending their nests, and sandhill cranes whooping it up. Songbirds are also prolific, so bring your binoculars and look for Willet, Long-billed Curlew, Sora, Wilson’s Snipe, Spotted Sandpiper, and Killdeer.
The Great Outdoors
Hike and Camp
The Palisades Mountains surround Swan Valley and invite you to explore thousands of miles of wildlands. For experienced hikers, the Waterfall Canyon Trail is a secluded trail through the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. At 25.5 miles (out & back), this is a great trail to ride horses, backpack, hike, and camp. The trail can be muddy or snowy in early spring, but by mid-June, expect firm ground. Another trail with amazing views is the Upper Palisades Lake Trail out of Irwin, ID. This is a popular trail for backpacking, camping, fishing, and horseback riding. Due to snowy or muddy conditions, this almost 14-mile trail is best hiked in June through October.
There is no shortage of campgrounds in Swan Valley, no matter what comfort level you seek. Swan Valley RV Park offers great hookups, deluxe cabins, and Airstream rentals close to town. The Falls Campground is located on the banks of the Snake River. It is a family-friendly stay that offers fishing and canoeing in the tranquil parts of the River.
Camp backcountry! The Palisades Campground, in the Palisades Creek Canyon, provides the perfect place to camp after a glorious day of hiking, fishing, and swimming in Palisades Creek and the Upper and Lower Palisades Lakes. Trails to the campground are nonmotorized, so you must backpack in your gear, but it’s worth it! Set up your tent under the stars and in the early summer months, you will likely have the site to yourself.
Go to the Reservoir,
by Dam!
Palisades Reservoir, created by the Palisades Dam, is a prominent feature of the Palisades Project, overseen by the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Spanning 25 square miles with 70 miles of shoreline, you can recreate to your heart’s content. Swim, paddleboard, boat, fish, or just lay on the sandy (albeit rocky) shore and sunbathe. Stop by Swan Valley Sports if you want to rent boats, boards, skis, or bikes before heading out into the great outdoors!
The reservoir offers amenities such as restrooms, boat ramps, and campgrounds, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for visitors.
After a day on the water, Swan Valley has an extra special treat waiting to be discovered. Those with a domineering sweet tooth MUST stop by Rainey’s Creek Country Store for their famous square ice cream cone. We don’t know why the shape of the ice cream makes it taste better, but it does!
