Late Season Fishing Tips for the South Fork
An angler’s dream come true, fishing fans can cast a line in the Yellowstone Teton Territory year round. The South Fork of the Snake River is an easily accessible stretch of water with year-round trout fishing and no limit on rainbow trout. The Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, near the community of Ashton, is a winter fishery with rainbows, a few big browns and lots of mountain whitefish. Henry’s Lake in Island Park is a coveted ice fishing destination with cutthroats, rainbow-cutthroat hybrids and trophy brook trout.
Planning for your winter water time by always planning for a chance of snow. Enjoy sleeping in while you wait for the temps to warm up. Shorter trips are satisfying choices during the winter–and if you’re visiting eastern Idaho, plenty of time to check in with the local experts and fly shops before heading out. Having the right gear is everything and swapping reports is always better in person.
Staying warm and dry in formidable weather can be a challenge. Idaho Fish and Game recommends planning trips that are closer to home because even if you remember to pack hand warmers and extra socks (and clothes) conditions can be tricky. From needing good cleats for traction and a second set of gloves, planning will always be the key to happiness. Ask the local expertise about gear, what’s biting and booking guided trips throughout the Yellowstone Teton Territory.
Frosty Fishing
In Swan Valley
The wildflowers might be gone and the days not as long, but early winter shows off the alpenglow of this rugged river-filled habitat. Some rivers and streams have different rules for winter, such as catch-and-release fishing only, restrictions on bait, or they may be closed to fishing.
