Idaho Winter Adventures Are Wild

Skijoring is where the West meets Alpine culture. Skiers race for their best time over an obstacle-filled course as they are pulled by cowboys and cowgirls hoping their horse pulls the athletes into first place.
Don’t miss this year’s event and Teton Valley’s best winter tailgate party.
The entire family will be in awe as skiers, snowboarders and riders compete for the Showdown’s $30,000 purse at The Grand Showdown in Driggs, February 22-23.
As competitors race to complete the course at the Teton Valley Fairgrounds, attendees can take in what it means to call Eastern Idaho home. Family, friends, co-workers, artisans and nonprofits come together for Teton Valley Skijoring’s annual competition, and the spectacle should be added to anyone’s winter bucket list when visiting the Yellowstone Teton Territory.
The esoteric and fast-paced sport is seeing a revival since its Olympic debut in the 1928 Olympics in St. Moritz as a demonstration sport. These days skijoring has a professional circuit and is picking up more events throughout the Rockies. An iconic representation of mountain living, both ranching and skiing come together in the sport for an exhilarating day at the races.
After dark, head down to Victor for Skijoring’s Live Auction & Libations to enjoy a night of philanthropy and live music with country singer Jared Rogerson & the Rodeo Wreck at Teton Valley’s microbrewery, Guidepost Brewing→.
Guidepost is just one of several microbreweries in Teton Valley. Be sure to complete your tasting flight with stops at Citizen 33, Grand Teton Brewing, Teton Tiger and Highpoint Cider. Grand Teton Distillery just completed a new tasting room and is located just north of the fairgrounds.
The Grand Showdown captures the spirit of the Teton Valley like no other. It’s the perfect weekend to mix up your winter plans and discover a new Western tradition that brings out professional skiers and career horsemen to compete.
All competitive events for the Grand Showdown take place at the Teton County Fairgrounds in Driggs, Idaho. Evening events take place in Victor.

The Showdown will air on the Cowboy Channel. Tickets are available for purchase at the event or on the Teton Valley Skijoring website.
In Ashton, dogs trump horses. The oldest All-American dog sled race has been running since 1917. This year, the American Dog Derby, a 56-mile route running the Warm River Trail to the Mesa Falls Trail before ending back at the Bear Gulch parking lot will welcome mushers to challenge their teams no matter the conditions, bluebird sky or blizzard, February 14-15.
Celebrating the get-out-and-get-after-it spirit that can only be found in the Yellowstone Teton Territory, the American Dog Derby has rewritten the rules for sled dogs. The urban mushing experience with the Tetons in the distance is a unique way to enjoy the cold temps and take the family out for an authentic old-time sporting event. There’s even an opportunity to run your own dog in the Mutt division. For more information about this year’s Derby, visit americandogderby.com→.
