Experience life of a real opal miner and uncover stunning gems hidden beneath the rugged Idaho landscape. In operation since 1941, Spencer Opal Mine is an annual must-do whether you’re a gem enthusiast, an outdoor adventurer, or simply looking for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Plan Your Visit to Spencer Opal Mine

Open Thursday through Monday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. during the summer months, make time to browse the large selection of opal rough, stones, and finished jewelry. Digging at the Tailings Pile is open 9am-5pm every day the shop is open. Digging includes a 2.5-gallon bucket for your ore and help from the mining staff.

The mine brings down fresh loads weekly for families to sort. Reservations are not required for the Trailings Pile but always call ahead to check on the weather. Open Dig Mine Experience does require reservations. The mine is accessible via a steep, rough two-track road. Four-wheel drive is advised. If your vehicle is unsuitable, you may need to arrange alternative transport. The mine is usually open to the public through mid-October weather permitting.

The onsite Opal Country Café is a haven for home-style cooking featuring juicy burgers and satisfying breakfasts served until 11a.m.
