Don’t Miss Your Shot This Hunting Season

More than 50% of the Yellowstone Teton Territory’s Upper Snake Region in either Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management acreage—which means an outdoor enthusiast needs to look no further to find pristine backcountry to take their shot this hunting season.
Beyond upland birds and waterfowl, the many tributaries of the region are also home to big game. Mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, pronghorn, black bear, mountain lion, wolf, moose, sheep, and mountain goats are all species open to regulated hunting. With so many large predators in our region, proper safety measures and hunting skills are essential.Â
Idaho has both controlled and general season hunts. Hunters must apply for controlled hunts, which are done through a lottery draw. General season hunts can be purchased over-the-counter on a first-come, first-serve basis. Be aware that nonresident tags tend to sell out before hunting season begins, so early purchase is encouraged.
Seasons and regulations vary with each bird, fish and game so be sure to visit idfg.idaho.gov→ for detailed information. If you’re not a seasoned hunter, consider booking a guided excursion with an outfitter.
Gear Up, Head Out
The Backcountry Is Waiting.

But one thing that doesn’t ever change: having the right gear.Â
As the locals like to say there is no bad weather or bad gear. Waterproof hunting boots, base layers with moisture wicking material, an outer shell that’s water-and-wind resistant, and warm gloves are an absolute must, even in early September! Weather can change quickly between summer and winter and sometimes several times throughout the day, with sunny afternoons and quickly dropping to freezing temps come evening.Â
Many seasoned hunting outfitters operate in Eastern Idaho. Look for the Deer Icon on our GUIDES AND TOURS PAGE for outfitters in the Eastern Idaho Region, or search by unit number at the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association→ and a full directory is also available from the Outfitters Guides and Licensing Board→. Idaho Fish and Game offers an interactive Idaho Hunt Planner→ online, designed to provide information on regulations, seasons, drawing odds, harvest statistics, maps, and hunt boundaries.
Dates of hunts and types of weapons allowed are all regulated in Idaho. Detailed information about the rules and regulations can be found at www.idfg.idaho.gov→.
