A little sand never hurt anyone

10,600 acres of clear, shifting, white quartz sand make up the St. Anthony Sand Dunes.
Although much of the sand dunes is managed as a wilderness study area–the St. Anthony Sand Dunes habitat provides year round habitat for sage sharp-tailed grouse and critical winter range for 2,500 elk, 1,500 mule deer and 500 moose–the area is popular for high off-road vehicle use. With dunes rising up to 400 feet high, it’s easy to understand how this natural phenomenon attracts riders from throughout the west.Â
April 1 marks the season opener for the riding area on the west side of St. Anthony Sand Dunes and west of Egin Lakes Campground (aka. “the big dunes”) are closed from January 1 through sunrise on April 1. The area south of Egin – Hamer Rd is also closed from January 1 through sunrise April 1. The areas completely surrounding the open sand of the St. Anthony Sand Dunes are closed from January 1 through sunrise on May 1st.
