Float your boat

August and September are ideal times to cast a line, and the Yellowstone Teton Territory is one of the few destinations where conditions don’t just provide live water, they provide pristine Rocky Mountain vistas.

Late August generally brings warm, sunny days with highs in the 80s and cooler evenings, making it a great chance to enjoy clear water.

The South Fork of the Snake River is a 66-mile stretch of river that flows across southeastern Idaho. Although there are a few Class 2 rapids, the float is primarily a drift boat’s dream with scenery, wildlife, and the opportunity for family bonding.

Another quintessential great high mountain lake, Henrys Lake is the kind of place that anglers dream about. Catch a cutthroat, brook and cut-bow hybrid trout in what is considered one of the finest trout fisheries in the West. Located 15 miles from Yellowstone National Park and surrounded on three sides by the Continental Divide, Henrys Lake State Park campsites are situated on the shoreline of the 6,000-acre lake. After a long day of fishing and hiking, take a swing on the porch of one of three park cabins.

Whether you are road-tripping through the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem or looking for a serene stop near the Idaho-Montana border, Henrys Lake will offer visitors untouched beauty ready for your next adventure. The park’s campground offers 8 full hookup, 75 water/electric or electric with access sites.

Be sure to check out the Idaho Fish and Game’s regulations, season closures and information about watercraft inspection to protect waters from invasive species.
