The Rusty Lantern Diner

This diner is ideal when it comes to homemade comfort food, small-town hospitality, and that cozy diner vibe that’s getting harder and harder to find. Ucon is a small town full of charm next to Idaho Falls.

I heard about The Rusty Lantern from friends and the East Idaho Adventures community, who told me to give it a try. They gave many food recommendations we should try at the diner. After many recommendations to try this place on various posts on my Instagram page, I’m so glad I gave it a try. I was surprised I hadn’t heard of it before because it was so good!

Let’s talk about food first, because that’s really what draws people in—and keeps them coming back. Most everything at The Rusty Lantern is made from scratch. We’re talking hand-pattied burgers, fresh-baked bread, homemade pies, and premium cuts of meat that are cooked just right.

Their burgers are full of flavor. You can tell they don’t skimp on quality—they use good beef, fresh toppings, and soft homemade buns. Their fries are freshly cut and so good.

We were too full to try dessert but I have also received so many recommendations on their various desserts. I believe I’ve been recommended every dessert item on the menu so apparently you can’t go wrong.

After 20 years of working in restaurants in Montana, the Hart family came back home to Idaho and brought an old Ucon diner back to life in 2010. With a love of antiques, family recipes, and plenty of hard work, they created a cozy spot full of small‑town charm.

Stepping into The Rusty Lantern feels like stepping back in time—but in the best way possible. It’s warm, inviting, and full of charm. The decorations are made up of antiques and cozy vibes, and the whole place gives a “come in and stay awhile” energy.

Whether you’re dining solo, meeting friends, or bringing your road-tripping kids in for a much-needed meal break, you’ll feel welcome. Everyone comes here, locals who eat here often and those who haven’t been in a while. Everyone’s treated like family.

Whether you’re passing through or just craving real, home‑style cooking, this is the place to stop. It’s not a chain or fast-food joint. It’s a real hometown diner, and those are getting harder to come by.

The prices are reasonable, the portions are generous, and the food tastes like it was made by someone who loves to cook. There’s nothing else quite like The Rusty Lantern Diner.

We tried the fresh bread, homemade soup, fried pickles, delicious cheeseburger and fries, and the chicken fried steak. We didn’t have any room for dessert but we’ll be back to try some next time. The fried pickles are some of the best I’ve tried. I loved the fresh bread and both our entrees. My husband and I like to share our entrees everywhere we go. The soup is good too and made in house.
