Your next favorite trail starts near Swan Valley. 🥾
Nestled by the scenic beauty of Swan Valley, Idaho, the Palisades Creek Trail is one of those hikes that makes it incredibly easy to fall in love with the outdoors. Surrounded by pine-covered hillsides, rushing creek water, and crisp mountain air, this trail offers everything from quick family adventures to full backcountry escapes.
Best of all, this hike is just a short drive from the heart of Swan Valley and offers enough natural beauty in the first quarter-mile to satisfy even the most casual hiker. For those looking to explore more, the trail connects to a network of paths leading deep into the wilderness for a wild adventure.
Getting to the Trailhead
The Palisades Creek Trail is located east of Swan Valley and is easy to find with Google Maps. As you head toward the area, you’ll pass Palisades Campground off to the right. To reach the trailhead, continue by turning left when it gives you the option of the campground to the right, and follow the road until you hit the main parking lot near a small restroom building.
There is a lot of parking most of the day, though it can fill up during weekends or peak season. If the lot is full, roadside parking is also available, but be sure to leave enough space for others and avoid blocking the roadway. Going early in the morning or during the weekdays will give you a better chance of having a convenient parking spot.

Quick and Beautiful: The Family-Friendly Waterfall Hike
One of the best features of this trail is how quickly it delivers a stunning experience. In just 20 minutes of walking, you can reach a peaceful and tucked-away waterfall that looks like something out of a nature film.
To get there, start at the trailhead and follow the main path. After crossing the first footbridge, be sure to turn left. The right fork will lead to other adventures, but it does not go to the waterfall. The path continues alongside Palisades Creek, offering serene views and the sound of flowing water the entire way.
This short section of the trail is:
- Well-maintained and wide enough for groups
- Shaded by tall pines and surrounded by lush vegetation
- A gentle incline, suitable for kids and beginners
- Lined with wildflowers during the spring and early summer
The trail to the falls is ideal for a casual outing, a picnic destination, or just a quick dose of nature without having to gear up for a long hike. It is also a great way to introduce younger hikers to the beauty of Idaho’s outdoors.

Beyond the Falls: A Gateway to Idaho’s Backcountry
While the waterfall might be the highlight for some, Palisades Creek Trail is just getting started. For those craving more time in the wilderness, this trail extends deep into the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, eventually leading to Lower and Upper Palisades Lakes. These alpine lakes are popular backpacking destinations and offer stunning views along the way.
This connecting trail is about 14 miles round trip if heading to the upper lake, and is ideal for an overnight trip or a longer day hike for seasoned hikers.
Along the extended route, expect to find:
- Forested pathways with elevation gain
- Creek crossings and occasional wildlife sightings
- Meadows and panoramic views near the lakes
- Primitive camping areas for backpackers
Horseback riding and mountain biking is also permitted on this trail, and it’s not uncommon to see riders heading into the backcountry for multi-day trips.

Bear Safety and Trail Reminders
One important reminder: Palisades Creek Trail is in bear country. Both black bears and grizzlies are known to inhabit the region, so proper preparation is essential for a safe and enjoyable visit.
Before heading out, make sure to: carry bear spray and know how to use it, make noise while hiking to avoid surprising wildlife, travel in groups when possible, store food and scented items properly if camping, stay aware of your surroundings, and stick to marked trails.

Local Charm and Post-Hike Treats
A trip to Palisades Creek Trail is not complete without enjoying a bit of Swan Valley’s small-town charm. The area is known for its peaceful setting and access to world-class fishing, especially along the South Fork of the Snake River.
After a hike, many visitors stop at Rainey Creek Country Store for a scoop (or three) of their famous square ice cream. It’s a classic stop that adds a sweet ending to a day well spent outdoors.
