Good food and an iconic giant mug. Welcome to Frostop Drive-In in Ashton. 🍔🥤
A Classic Stop at Frostop Drive-In
There’s a certain kind of magic that happens on Highway 20 as you roll through Eastern Idaho. With the sky stretched wide, and the Tetons peaked over the horizon, you see something that makes you do a double take. Tucked right in the middle of this Idahoan landscape on the north end of Ashton, you start to see it.
A giant root beer mug.
If you’ve ever driven through Ashton and spotted that enormous frosty cup, you have found Frostop Drive-In, a beloved slice of Idaho that has been serving up burgers, fries, and thick, creamy shakes since 1965.
This restaurant is not just a place to eat. It’s an experience.

A True Highway 20 Landmark
Ashton is the kind of town that invites you to slow down and enjoy the journey. Just minutes from Mesa Falls, surrounded by the lush farmland and wide-open sky, it is a gem of a stop for anyone traveling between Rexburg, Island Park, and the west entrance of Yellowstone.
And right along the highway, Frostop Drive-In stands proudly as one of the last true drive-in diners in the area. This place is retro, in the best way, and comes with a huge nostalgic blast from the past vibe with all of its rustic charm. They have been making burgers, hot sandwiches, shakes, and other cold treats from the same spot for 60 years.
When you pull in, you’ve got choices: stay in your car for the classic food delivered to the window experience, take a seat at one of the outdoor tables next to your parking spot, or head inside for a cozy, diner-style experience at the counter or indoor table.
However you enjoy your food, one thing’s for sure – you are not going to leave hungry.

The Frostop Experience: Food That Feels Like Home
So, what’s on the menu? All the staples you’d hope for in an old-fashioned American drive-in and then some!
Some major highlights:
- Burgers: Juicy, flavorful, and perfectly griddled. The buns are soft, the patties are generous, and the toppings are fresh. Try the bacon cheeseburger if you are craving something basic or the classic Frostop burger that has Black Forest ham and bacon for something extra.
- Fries & Tots: Crispy, golden, and even better dipped in their fry sauce.
- Shakes: Thick, rich, and blended right in the shop. The chocolate shake alone is worth the stop, but I highly recommend branching out. They’ve got flavors from huckleberry to peanut butter. The huckleberry shake is a popular one and it comes with fresh huckleberry fruit.
- Root Beer & Root Beer Floats: Of course it wouldn’t be Frostop without their signature frosted mugs filled with crisp root beer to mirror their iconic giant mug right outside.
This isn’t fast food, it’s real food, made by folks who know what they are doing and love doing it.

A Little Nostalgia, A Lot of Flavor
Frostop opened its doors in 1965, and it’s kept a lot of its vintage appeal. In a world where restaurants chase trends, this place sticks to what it does best: quality food, simple joy, and great service.
Just drive up and order from your car, come inside, or sit outside. Enjoy the kind of meal that reminds you how good simple things can be.
See our experience below.
What really makes Frostop truly special:
- 🏆 Family-Owned Tradition: Generations of locals and travelers have stopped here for a reason.
- 🚗 Carhop Service: One of the last places where you can still eat and be served from your car window.
- 🧋 House-Made Shakes: Mixed fresh in-shop, thick enough to need a spoon.
- 🪑 Outdoor Tables with Checker Boards painted on top: Fun for kids, nostalgic for adults. A bag of checkers pieces are waiting for you at the table.
- 🌞 Perfect Road Trip Stop: Just off Hwy 20, with close proximity to Mesa Falls, Yellowstone, and Island Park.
There’s something special about sitting outside on a summer day, watching the cars go by on Hwy 20, a burger in one hand and a shake in the other. Maybe you are playing a lazy game of checkers at an outdoor table. Maybe you are just soaking in the small-town Idaho charm.
This isn’t a stop you are going to forget. It’s the kind of place you’ll tell your friends about when you get home.
