Cast a Line This Spring

The full turnouts along the Snake River are a sure sign that it’s fishing season.Â
Â
March is a great opportunity to explore deep still waters of the Yellowstone Teton Territory for large cutthroat, rainbow and brown trout. With clear waters at this time of year and lower stream levels, the South Fork of the Snake River is known around the world as some of the best tailwaters to be fished–and it’s only thirty minutes from downtown Idaho Falls.Â
Flowing from Wyoming into the state of Idaho into Palisades Reservoir, the South Fork’s tailwater flows from the Palisades Dam a distance of sixty-four miles to its confluence with the Henry’s Fork. The Irwin and Ashton access points will be the most consistent until run off has completed this spring.Â
In order to fish the South Fork successfully, keeping up with the hatches is a must–and the first hatch of the year, Blue-winged Olives, starts now. Check in with local fishing guides and outfitters→ for current river conditions and reports. As it’s still early, some boat ramps may not be accessible and water conditions remain cold.
